Jobs at Daylife

Have a Passion for Publishing?

Daylife is a tight and talented team of 26 people, based in the Soho neighborhood of New York and passionate about building the next generation of web-based publishing and content services. The work we do helps publishers of all kinds and sizes - from Fortune 500 brands to enterprising bloggers – create audience experiences that are more engaging, more evocative, and more connected.

We pride ourselves on our no-drama, fluid, relaxed, yet methodical culture and our ability to build anything (as noted workplace management guru Jay-Z put it, "difficult takes a day, impossible takes a week"). Together, we have many years of experience developing fancy software at fancy companies (we’re now developing even fancier software, but at a more modest company). We work hard and somehow still manage to have fun doing it. And right now we need your help.

  • CSS Application Developer (Contractor-only)

We're looking for someone passionate about user interface development for web-based applications. As a CSS Application Developer, you'll style web applications with elegant UI designs using CSS, XHTML, and related technologies. You'll work with creative designers and engineers to transform Photoshop images and wireframes into user interfaces and interactions according to design specs, agile decision making, and by asking the right questions. Where needed, you’ll go beyond CSS styling and XHTML semantic markup to Python-based template and JavaScript/AJAX development.

This position is for on-site, full-time work in New York City. Telecommuting is not an option. This is a 3-month minimum contract with potential for longer engagement.

    Requirements:

    • Extreme expertise in CSS and XHTML semantic markup, standards compliance, and cross-browser issues.
    • Must have at least 2 years experience building dynamic, database-backed web applications (not just marketing sites).
    • User interface design sensitivity and skills required. Must have experience collaboratively negotiating and quickly getting to decisions with product managers, visual designers, and engineers on desired visual layout versus technical limitations or effort; must be able to paper prototype UI mockups.
    • Must be able to work closely and collaboratively (e.g., pair programming) with team members. This includes coordinating work with other team members as needed, and not hesitating to clearly expose impediments. Strong teamwork with lots of face-to-face communications is paramount.
    • Must be able to take both direction and/or initiative where needed to help the team avoid pitfalls and solve the "whole problem" from the user’s perspective.
    • Some form of dynamic language experience a major plus (PHP, JavaScript, Python, Ruby). Extra credit for experience in designing modular, object-oriented JavaScript, or with using JavaScript frameworks such as JQuery; experience using JUnit testing also a plus.
    • Some CMS experience required; it's a plus if you have experience with MVC design pattern and/or templating frameworks such as Jinja, Genshi, JSP, Smarty (ability to adopt these is required).
    • Must have experience integrating into an engineering team (ideally an agile development team) including adopting the team’s tools, frameworks, practices, and workflows.
    • Hard-working and dedicated to meeting all commitments to the team, even if this requires extra time. (Example: you underestimate work needed to hit a team milestone, but put in the extra effort to get there on schedule.)
